Student Move Out Cleanout in Chicopee, MA

Late May is the busiest stretch of the year for junk removal in this part of the state, and it is not close. Thousands of students clear out of off campus housing inside about a week, and most of them leave things behind.

The reason it lands on Chicopee is geography rather than campuses. UMass Amherst, Smith, Mount Holyoke, Amherst College, Hampshire and Westfield State are all inside a short drive, and Elms College sits in the city itself. Landlords in every direction need the same thing at the same time.

Turnaround is the whole problem. Leases here commonly end on 31 May and start on 1 June, which gives a landlord one day to empty, clean, paint and re-let. Booked in advance that works. Booked on 30 May it does not, because every crew in the valley is already committed.

Book it in April

This is the one job on the site where the date matters more than the details. A landlord who calls in the second half of April gets the slot they want. A landlord who calls on the day competes with every other landlord in the valley. Same work, wildly different availability.

What students leave

Cheap flat pack furniture that will not survive another move. A futon. A mini fridge, which counts as an appliance and needs refrigerant recovery. A television. A mattress or a mattress topper. Bags of clothing. Food, sometimes still in the refrigerator. And a large quantity of ordinary trash.

The mini fridge is the sneaky one. It looks trivial and it carries the same federal requirement as a full size refrigerator, so a certified technician has to recover the refrigerant before the shell is scrapped. Four apartments with one each is four fees.

Clothing is the other one. Textiles were shut out of disposal on 1 November 2022 under 310 CMR 19.017, and student housing produces bags of them. They go to textile recycling, which takes worn and stained items, not only wearable ones.

Plenty of it should be donated

A serious share of what comes out of student housing is barely used. UMass runs a program that grew out of staff noticing how much of what went in the dumpster was in fine condition, and local charities take furniture, kitchen goods, books and clothing all spring. If a unit has usable things in it, say so, because a crew will route them to donation rather than to a transfer station and that is the better outcome for everyone including the bill.
