Springfield sits directly across the Chicopee River from us, and the two cities have been growing into each other for a hundred and fifty years. It is the third largest city in Massachusetts, which means it is also the largest concentration of old houses, rented apartments and things nobody has dealt with in this region.

The housing is the reason the work exists

Forest Park and McKnight are full of large Victorian houses, most of them cut into apartments at some point and cut back again later. A house like that has a full attic, a full cellar, a back staircase and often a carriage house behind it. Every one of those is a place where things went and stayed.

The postwar neighborhoods work differently. Sixteen Acres, East Forest Park and the streets around them are ranches and split levels on real lots, with attached garages and finished basements. Less attic, more garage, and a shed out back roughly half the time.

Then there is the rental stock through the North End, the South End and Six Corners, where the calls are apartment clearances between tenants and the constant question is which floor and whether the stairs turn.

What the city program costs, and what it does not do

Springfield does run bulk collection, and it is worth understanding before hiring anybody. It works on stickers. Since February 2025 an ordinary item is $8 and a mattress is $16, and the program is only available to properties paying the annual trash fee.

Run the numbers on a real example. A bedroom set is a mattress, a box spring, a bed frame, a dresser and a nightstand. That is one item at $16 and four at $8, so $48 in stickers, plus mattress bags, plus getting all five pieces from the second floor to the curb on your own.

That last part is where the program stops being cheap. Every sticker assumes the item is already at the street. If it is upstairs, in a cellar, or too heavy for one person, the price on the sticker is not the price of the job.

The jobs that come up most

Estate clearances in the older neighborhoods, where a family home is being sold and nobody lives locally any more. Apartment clearances at the end of a tenancy. Cellar clearances in houses that flooded at some point. Garage and shed work in the postwar streets. And a steady run of single mattresses, because a mattress is the one item nobody has a plan for.

Springfield also has a lot of three story buildings with no elevator, which is the single biggest driver of what an apartment clearance costs. Say the floor and the staircase when you call and the quote will survive the arrival.

Parking and access

The older streets are narrow and parked full on both sides. A truck that cannot stop near the door adds a walk to every trip, and in winter the snow banks take the only spots that would have worked. If there is a driveway, an alley or a back door onto a yard, that is worth saying up front.
