Exercise equipment is the job where the object is not especially large but is startlingly heavy and lives in a cellar. That combination is why it takes two people instead of a favor from a friend.

A motorized treadmill runs 200 to 300 pounds, and most of that sits in the motor housing at one end, so the weight is nowhere near balanced. An elliptical is lighter but long and clumsy. A multi station home gym is the worst of the three, because the weight stack alone can be 200 pounds and the frame does not separate without tools.

The good news is that cast iron is clean scrap. Metal has been off the Massachusetts disposal list since 1 July 2006, so plates and dumbbells go straight to a yard rather than a transfer station. That is one of the few parts of a junk job with real recovered value.

A machine with a console is a mixed item. Frame and stack are scrap steel, the motor holds copper, and the display is a small electronic. A hauler splits it rather than sending the whole thing one direction.

Before you pay to get rid of it

Something that still works and is in decent shape is worth trying to give away first. Gyms, schools and community centers occasionally take machines and there is a real second hand market. It is not always worth the effort, and a dead treadmill has no market whatsoever, but a working one deserves one phone call before it becomes a bill.
