These come down more or less the way they went up, in reverse and with more swearing. A wooden set is bolted and screwed together, and a crew works from the top down, roof, then decks, then the swing beam, then the legs.

Almost all wooden playsets are pressure treated or cedar. Treated wood cannot be chipped or composted and travels as construction debris. Cedar is cleaner but still goes on a wood route rather than into a landfill, because Massachusetts pulled wood out of disposal on 1 July 2006.

The legs are usually in concrete

Most sets have their posts set in concrete, or at least anchored with concrete footings. Pulling those means digging and it is a separate line. Try to give it away first

A set in genuinely good order will find a home. Local buy nothing groups and neighborhood pages move them fairly often, and the person taking it usually handles the disassembly themselves, which is the whole cost.

Be honest about condition though. Anything with soft wood, split beams, rusted swing hangers or a rotted deck should not be passed to another family with children on it. That is the case where hauling is the right answer rather than the lazy one.

Metal sets from the seventies and eighties are a different story. Those are scrap value and come apart quickly, and there is no sensible reason to pass on a rusted A frame.

What is under it

A pea gravel or mulch bed under the set, sometimes with a plastic border. Rubber mats. Occasionally a poured pad under a slide landing. Gravel and rubber both price apart from the structure because of weight, and mulch that has been down for ten years is mostly soil at this point. Say what is under there when you call.
