South Hadley borders Chicopee to the north and sits in Hampshire County, which is how a hauler based here honestly covers two counties without stretching anything. It is two settlements really, the Falls down by the river and the Center up by the college.

The Falls and the Center

South Hadley Falls grew around the mills and the canal, and the housing shows it. Older, denser, more two families and rentals, closer to the river. The work looks like the mill city work across the line: apartment clearances, cellars, heavy items on narrow stairs.

The Center is built around Mount Holyoke College and reads completely differently. Larger houses, faculty and long term residents, deep lots, mature trees. Estate clearances, attic and cellar work, and a lot of downsizing as long time owners move on.

The college shapes the year

Mount Holyoke moves students in and out on a schedule, and the off campus rentals around it turn over on the same dates. Late May is the pressure point, the way it is everywhere in this valley, and it is the one time of year when booking six weeks ahead genuinely matters.

What comes out of student housing is predictable: flat pack furniture that will not survive another move, a mattress or a topper, a mini refrigerator, a television and bags of clothing. Two of those carry fees. A mini fridge needs refrigerant recovery the same as a full size one, and clothing cannot go in the trash at all since the Massachusetts textile ban took effect on 1 November 2022.

Older houses, older problems

A good deal of the housing here predates 1940, which brings the usual list. Plaster over wood lath rather than drywall. Cast iron radiators from converted steam systems, which are excellent scrap and a two person carry each. Cellars that take water. And the pre 1978 questions of asbestos in pipe wrap and floor tile, and vermiculite in attics, both of which stop a crew rather than slowing one.

None of that is a reason to avoid the work. It is a reason to say the age of the house on the first phone call, because it changes how the job gets planned.

The Falls has a mill district that keeps changing hands

The buildings along the canal at the Falls have been through several lives, and the ground floor units in particular turn over. A small shop, a studio or a workshop closing means fixtures, shelving, display units and whatever the last tenant left, which is a commercial clearance rather than a household one.

Those jobs run on a lease rather than a mood. What has to stay and what has to go is written down, and reading it before booking anything is worth more than any advice a hauler can give you about the space.

Worth adding that the college is not the only calendar here. Long term residents in the Center are at the age where houses get downsized, and those clearances run large because a house held for forty years holds forty years of things. Three to eight truckloads is normal once the attic and the cellar are opened up.

Access

Generally good. Most of the Center has driveways and room to work. The Falls is tighter, closer to the river, and more likely to need a truck stopping on the street. Say which part of town you are in and it more or less answers itself.
