Carpet is one of the few jobs where the thing you forgot about doubles the bill. Carpet is one layer. Underneath it is padding, and padding takes up more room in a truck than the carpet does once it is rolled.

One room produces two rolls, not one. Carpet is dense and heavy, roughly the weight of a grown adult for an average bedroom. Padding weighs almost nothing and eats space, and space is what you are buying. Between them, a single room fills a noticeable share of a truck.

Volume. This is the honest reason carpet is quoted by area rather than by the piece. A whole first floor can be most of a truck once the padding joins it. Several rooms means starting at half a truck.

Where it goes, and the answer is not great

A transfer station, mostly. Carpet recycling exists but there is very little of it in this part of the state, and mixed fiber broadloom has almost no buyer. Carpet has never made it onto the state disposal ban list. The tack strips split into wood and nails, so those go to the construction stream and to scrap. Anyone promising carpet recycling should be able to name the facility.
