Junk Removal in Holyoke, MA

Holyoke sits just north of us across the Connecticut, and it is the hardest place in this area to get rid of anything large. That is not an opinion about the city, it is what the collection rules say.

The city does not pick up bulk items at all

There is no curbside collection in Holyoke for furniture, mattresses, appliances, televisions or computers. Not for a fee, not by appointment. The route is a drop off center, which is open two days a week during working hours, requires a Refuse Disposal Card, and caps residents at a limited number of visits a year.

Read that against who lives here. A large majority of Holyoke households rent, and the housing is three story walk ups built between 1850 and 1890 for mill workers. A tenant moving out on a Saturday with a sofa and a mattress has no municipal option at all, because the drop off is closed and they have no truck.

Drop off hours, card requirements and visit limits are set by the city and change. Confirm with Holyoke before planning around any of it.

What that means in practice

Most of the calls out of Holyoke are apartment clearances and single heavy items, and most of them are on the second or third floor of a building with a narrow staircase that turns at the landing. That staircase is the price, not the sofa.

Landlords make up a large share of it too. Turnover in this housing stock is constant, and a unit that has to be painted and re let cannot sit for a week while somebody borrows a pickup.

The buildings themselves

Holyoke was laid out around the canal system and built dense. Brick blocks, wooden triple deckers, and a lot of buildings that have been apartments, then something else, then apartments again. Cellars are shared, storage is a wooden bin in a basement, and the front door often opens straight onto the sidewalk with nowhere for a truck to stop.

Up the hill it changes. The Highlands has larger single family houses with driveways, garages and yards, and the work there looks like any other older residential neighborhood: garage clearances, sheds, cellars, and estate jobs when a house changes hands.

Paper mills left behind more than buildings

Holyoke was the paper capital of the country for a stretch, and the industrial buildings along the canals have been subdivided into workshops, storage, studios and small operations dozens of times over. Those spaces empty out regularly, and clearing one is a different job from clearing a house.

Freight elevators in these buildings are old and slow, loading docks were sized for smaller trucks than anybody runs now, and building management usually wants a certificate of insurance and a booked elevator slot before anybody arrives. Sort that two weeks out, not on the day.

Things worth knowing before you book

Say the floor first, before anything about what is being removed. Then say whether a truck can stop at the door, because on many of these streets it cannot. Those two facts decide the quote more than the contents do.

If it is a mattress, expect a separate fee of roughly $25 to $50. Massachusetts shut mattresses out of disposal on 1 November 2022 and they go to a recycler that separates the steel, foam and wood. There is no version of that item that is free.
